Chapter 5

The contacts in high and low societies

Amalia Ivelen looked at the twins in the crib. They were her children, hers and Peter’s. Two boys, Roman and Jacob. Peter is filled with so much joy!

Amalia on the other hand remembered only pain, a red sheet of pain that covered the light and twisted her intestines in mortal spasms. There was a moment when she thought that she would have died and was surprisingly not scared. Death was only scary if there was no one waiting on the other side. She had someone who would be waiting. She knew it. Suddenly, she thought about Sessie and Jess. I cannot not leave them alone, can I? Once again she tried to come back, but the pain was pushing her out, not letting her take a breath…she was losing the will to resist; and then it was better. A female face bent down over her, and Amalia thought she saw a saint. The saint was saying soothing speeches, and the pain receded, gradually…until she heard the cry of her newborn babies and realized she was alive.

Only after, did she realize that the saint had been Lilian Earton; only later, did she understand that the bright halo around the saint's head had been the sunset…only later…and surprised her.

She had heard her dear brother call his wife a cow. Lilian was anything but a cow. Her eyes shined with extraordinary wisdom, her pink lips smiled, and her stature was prominent but not at all gross. She carried herself and her body with such dignity that it filled the room with awe.

The woman knew her own price, and the price was high. Before Amalia knew it, Lily was gone, replaced by three Virman women. The doctors recommended her to stay in bed for at least ten days, and she followed their instructions. The Virmans washed, scrubbed, polished and made the servants run around to and fro; if anyone complained they would reply by saying that illnesses begin when hygiene ends and that the countess ordered them to take care of the marchioness.

Soon, Amalia noticed that she could breathe with more ease, that her children cried less and that being rubbed with perfumed water thrice a day made her feel better. She was astonished even more when she received Lilian Earton’s presents to mark the birthday of her children.

Amalia appreciated the ferronnière as well as the long shirt; the part designed to cover breasts was made of lace and the rest was pure silk. Lily also sent other little things made of lace.

All this was made in Earton! In the middle of nowhere! At Jess’s estate! Incredible.

Amalia could not wait to get out of bed. She really wanted to speak to her new relative, to understand where she got such things from, to figure out how her brother could overlook Lilian.

Lilian herself did not even have a spare second to write to Amalia. She was totally busy with other things. For days, Lily was trapped in her own house.
